The following images were actually work-related.

obviously NOT part of the design

Passivation "pillars" formed when copper particles were left behind on a passivation thin-film layer [a step in the process of integrated circuit wafer fabrication].  When the passivation was etched away, the copper particle shielded the passivation beneath it from the etch, leaving it behind, creating the pillar.  The dry riverbed appearance of the general surface is from the 5-year-old Au-Pd coating applied to the sample for conductivity.  -- Rick

cross-section of a gold-plated copper trace
Platinum was deposited on the trace with a Focused Ion Beam (FIB)
to facilitate in the cross-sectioning process.  -- Rick

gold at 1 million times magnification and at 1kV
Very impressive for any SEM to achieve.  -- Rick
