SEM Image of Diatoms

Diatoms are unicellular or colonial algae with silicified cell walls which are left behind as skeletons when they die, making up the major portion of what is called diatomaceous earth, or diatomite.  The amazing beauty and diversity of their forms make them one of the most interesting subjects for the SEM.
